Robert Charles O'Brien (born June 11, 1960) is an American lawyer, diplomat, and politician who served as the 28th National Security Advisor to the President of the United States from 2019 to 2021.
Born in Los Angeles, California, O'Brien graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a degree in history in 1982. He went on to earn a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1985.
O'Brien began his career as a lawyer in Los Angeles. He later became a partner in the law firm O'Brien, Amundson, & Bohrer, specializing in international law and business transactions.
In the business world, O'Brien served as Chairman and CEO of several companies, including CombiMatrix Corporation and Spherex Incorporated. He also served on the board of directors of several other companies, including GenCorp and Redwire Corporation.
O'Brien's public service career began in 2005 when he was appointed as a Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs by President George W. Bush. In this role, he negotiated the release of several American hostages held by the Taliban.
During the Obama administration, O'Brien served as the State Department's Special Representative for Iran. He was also involved in the negotiations that led to the Iran nuclear deal.
In September 2019, President Donald Trump appointed O'Brien as National Security Advisor. He replaced John Bolton, who had been fired by Trump.
