Robert John Wagner Jr. was born on February 10, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan. His father was a traveling salesman, and his mother was an actress. Wagner showed an early interest in performing, and he began taking acting classes in high school. After graduating, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career.
In 1950, Wagner made his film debut in The Happy Years. He went on to star in several films throughout the 1950s, including Stars and Stripes Forever (1952), Broken Lance (1954), and The Mountain (1956). In 1959, he starred in the television series It Takes a Thief, which made him a household name.
