Ong Teng Cheong (22 January 1936 – 8 February 2002) was the fifth President of Singapore, serving from 1 September 1993 to 31 August 1999. He was a member of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP). Before his presidency, Ong held various ministerial positions, including Minister for Communications and Minister for National Development.
Ong was born on 22 January 1936, in Amoy, Fujian province, China. His family moved to Singapore when he was a child. He attended Chung Cheng High School and later graduated from the University of Singapore with a degree in law.
Ong began his political career in 1972, when he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Kim Keat. He served as Minister for Communications from 1977 to 1985, and as Minister for National Development from 1985 to 1993.
In 1993, Ong was elected as the fifth President of Singapore. As President, he played a ceremonial role, but he also had some constitutional powers, such as the power to veto legislation. Ong was known for his strong work ethic and his commitment to public service.
