"The Office" is an American mockumentary sitcom that follows the lives of the employees at Dunder Mifflin Paper Company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The show ran for nine seasons from 2005 to 2013 and has become one of the most popular and beloved sitcoms of all time.
"Dinner Party" is the fourteenth episode of the fourth season of "The Office." It first aired on February 1, 2008. The episode follows Michael Scott (Steve Carell) and his girlfriend Jan Levinson (Melora Hardin) as they host a dinner party for Michael's colleagues.
My favorite joke in the episode comes at the end of the dinner party. After a disastrous evening that includes Michael burning his foot, Jan breaking up with him, and Phyllis (Phyllis Smith) and Bob (Phyllis Smith) announcing their engagement, Michael and Jan are sitting on the couch in Michael's apartment. Michael is trying to make things better by making a joke.
"I've got a lot of questions," Michael says. "Number one: how dare you?"
Jan doesn't laugh.
"Number two," Michael continues. "Who is Justice Beaver?"
Jan still doesn't laugh.
"Number three," Michael says. "What is in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet."
Jan still doesn't laugh.
"Number four," Michael says. "I am Beyoncé, always."
Jan finally laughs.
I love this joke because it's so unexpected. Michael is trying to make a joke to lighten the mood, but he just keeps digging himself deeper into a hole. The fact that Jan finally laughs makes the joke even funnier.
I love this joke because it's so well-written and executed. The setup is perfect, and the punchline is hilarious. It's also a very relatable joke. We've all been in situations where we've tried to make a joke to lighten the mood, but it's just fallen flat. Michael's joke is the perfect example of this.
"Dinner Party" is one of my favorite episodes of "The Office." It's a hilarious episode with a lot of great jokes. But my favorite joke is definitely Michael's "Justice Beaver" joke. It's a joke that I'll never forget.
