Gays Mills, Wisconsin, a picturesque village nestled amidst the rolling hills of Crawford County, has a rich history dating back to the mid-1800s. Its unique location and resilient spirit have played a pivotal role in shaping its identity and development. However, few people know the fascinating story of its original settlement.
The area that would become Gays Mills was first inhabited by Native American tribes, primarily the Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) and Meskwaki (Fox) nations. In the early 19th century, as westward expansion gained momentum, European settlers began arriving in the region.
In 1846, a group of settlers led by William Gay established a settlement on the west bank of the Wisconsin River, approximately four miles south of the present-day village of Gays Mills. This settlement was initially known as "Gay's Landing" and served as a vital trading and transportation hub for the surrounding area.

As the community grew, the need for a more centralized location became apparent. In 1874, the settlement was relocated to the east bank of the Wisconsin River, at its confluence with the Kickapoo River. This new location offered better access to transportation and resources, and the settlement was officially incorporated as the village of Gays Mills.
Several factors contributed to the decision to relocate Gays Mills:
Over the years, Gays Mills has flourished as a vibrant community. Its economic base has shifted from agriculture to tourism, with the Kickapoo Valley Scenic Byway and the Wisconsin River offering opportunities for outdoor recreation and adventure.
The village is also home to several historic buildings, including the Charles A. Gay House, which was built in 1850 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
