Edgerrin James, born August 1, 1978, in Immokalee, Florida, is a former running back who made a name for himself in the NFL during his impressive 11-year career. He earned All-American honors as a member of the Miami Hurricanes, where he led the nation in rushing yards in 1998. In the following year, he was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts with the fourth overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft.
James became an instant sensation with the Colts, rushing for 1,553 yards and 13 touchdowns in his rookie season. He quickly established himself as one of the league's most dynamic runners, averaging over 1,200 rushing yards per year during his first six seasons. James led the Colts to four consecutive AFC East division titles and three AFC Championship Game appearances, although they never made it to the Super Bowl.
After a brief stint with the Arizona Cardinals in 2006, James returned to the team in 2009. This time, he played a key role in the Cardinals' resurgence under coach Ken Whisenhunt. James rushed for 938 yards and nine touchdowns in 2009, helping the team win the NFC West division title and reach the NFC Championship Game. In 2010, he notched another 1,031 rushing yards and scored 11 touchdowns.
Over the course of his career, James racked up some impressive statistics:
- 9,174 rushing yards, 10th all-time in NFL history
- 50 rushing touchdowns
- 4 Pro Bowl selections
- 2 All-Pro selections
- NFL Offensive Player of the Year award (2000)
- AFC Rushing Yards Leader (1999)
- Inducted into the Indianapolis Colts Ring of Honor (2022)
Edgerrin James is widely regarded as one of the greatest running backs of his generation. He was known for his elusive running style, powerful running, and knack for finding holes in opposing defenses. Off the field, James is known for his philanthropy and work with underprivileged youth.
Edgerrin James's arrival in Arizona coincided with the rise of the Cardinals' offense under offensive coordinator Todd Haley. Haley's high-octane, pass-happy offense complemented James's running ability, creating a balanced and potent attack.
James's experience and leadership were invaluable to the Cardinals. He provided a veteran presence in the locker room and served as a mentor to younger players. On the field, James provided a much-needed physical presence in the running game, allowing the Cardinals to control the clock and set up play-action passes.
In 2011, the Cardinals, led by quarterback Kurt Warner, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, and James, embarked on a historic season. The team finished the regular season with a 13-3 record, earning a first-round bye in the playoffs. James rushed for 977 yards and six touchdowns that season.
The Cardinals defeated the Green Bay Packers in the Divisional Round to advance to the NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers. In a thrilling and heartbreaking game, the Cardinals came up just short, losing 28-24. James rushed for 63 yards on 18 carries in the game.
After the 2011 season, James retired from the NFL at the age of 33. He finished his career with the Cardinals, where he spent the final three seasons of his playing days. James remains a beloved figure in Arizona and is considered one of the most important players in the team's recent history.
The Cardinals have struggled to replace James's production since his retirement. The team has had several disappointing seasons in recent years, failing to reach the playoffs since 2015. However, the Cardinals remain hopeful that they can find another running back who can provide the same kind of leadership and production that James did.
