A massive 40-car crash on the New Jersey Turnpike on Monday morning has left dozens of people injured, according to state police.
The crash occurred at around 10:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the turnpike near Exit 8A in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey. According to witnesses, a tractor-trailer rear-ended a passenger car, causing a chain reaction that involved dozens of other vehicles.
State police said that at least 50 people were injured in the crash, with six of them in critical condition. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The crash caused the southbound lanes of the turnpike to be closed for several hours while emergency crews worked to clear the scene. The northbound lanes were also closed for a time, but have since reopened.
State police are investigating the cause of the crash. They said that it is too early to say what charges may be filed.
Witnesses to the crash described a chaotic and frightening scene.
"I saw cars flying everywhere," said one witness. "It was like something out of a movie."
Another witness said that he saw people trapped in their cars, screaming for help.
"It was a nightmare," he said. "I've never seen anything like it."
The New Jersey Turnpike is one of the busiest highways in the United States, with an average of over 140,000 vehicles traveling on it each day. The turnpike has a history of serious crashes, including a 50-car pileup in 2014 that killed one person and injured dozens more.
The latest crash has raised concerns about the safety of the New Jersey Turnpike. Some critics say that the turnpike is too narrow and that the speed limit is too high.
"This is a dangerous highway," said one safety advocate. "It's time for the state to take action to make it safer."
State officials have promised to review the safety of the New Jersey Turnpike in light of the latest crash.
"We are committed to making our roads safe for everyone," said one state official. "We will take a hard look at the turnpike and make any changes that are necessary."
