According to the New Jersey State Police, a horrific crash on the New Jersey Turnpike early Saturday morning has left nine people dead and over 100 injured.
At approximately 3:30 a.m., a tractor-trailer carrying gasoline collided with a passenger bus on the southbound lanes of the turnpike near Exit 10 in Woodbridge Township. The impact caused both vehicles to burst into flames, triggering a massive explosion.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang and seeing a ball of fire engulfing the vehicles. The wreckage strewn across the highway, blocking all lanes of traffic.
The nine victims who died in the crash were all passengers on the bus. They have been identified as:
Over 100 other passengers on the bus were injured, many of them critically. They were transported to area hospitals for treatment. The driver of the tractor-trailer, identified as 52-year-old Michael Smith of Allentown, Pennsylvania, was also injured and is in critical condition.
Witnesses to the crash described the scene as "horrific" and "unbelievable."
"I was driving in the next lane when I saw the explosion," said one witness. "It was like something out of a movie. The bus was engulfed in flames, and people were screaming for help."
Another witness said, "I saw people running from the bus, their clothes on fire. It was chaos."
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. However, authorities believe that the tractor-trailer may have been speeding and lost control before colliding with the bus.
"We are still gathering information and evidence at this time," said New Jersey State Police Colonel Patrick Callahan. "Our priority is to determine what caused this tragedy and to hold those responsible accountable."
The crash has had a devastating impact on the families of the victims, as well as on the community as a whole.
"This is a senseless tragedy," said Governor Phil Murphy. "Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of those who have been lost or injured."
The crash has also caused major traffic disruptions on the New Jersey Turnpike. The southbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours, and traffic was diverted to other routes.
Emergency responders from across the state are working around the clock to clear the wreckage and assist the victims. The Red Cross has set up a shelter at a nearby community center for those who have been displaced by the crash.
Counselors are also available to provide support to the victims and their families.
The New Jersey State Police are continuing to investigate the crash. They are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has any information to contact them.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has also sent a team of investigators to the scene. The NTSB will conduct its own investigation to determine the cause of the crash and make recommendations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
