School Selection
When choosing a primary school for their children, parents should consider the following factors:
-
Location: Proximity to home or workplace
-
School Culture and Values: Aligned with the family's values and beliefs
-
Academic Curriculum: Strength in specific subjects or areas
-
Co-Curricular Activities: Range and quality of sports, clubs, and activities
-
Special Education Needs (SEN): Availability of support for children with SEN
It is recommended for parents to visit the schools they are interested in and speak with the school staff to get a firsthand understanding of the school environment and curriculum.
Home-School Distance
MOE uses a Home-School Distance (HSD) system to prioritize children who live near the schools they wish to attend. A school's HSD is the maximum distance within which the majority of students who applied for a place in Phase 2B or 2C were allocated a place.
Parents can use the MOE HSD Calculator to determine the HSD of schools they are interested in and estimate their chances of getting a place.
Tie-Breaker Criteria
In the event of a tie between eligible children, MOE will use the following criteria to determine who to allocate the available school places to:
- Child's HSD
- Number of siblings in the school
- Birth order (older children will be given priority)
- Random lottery selection
