Westover Metro Airport (CEF), located in Chicopee, Massachusetts, is a public use airport owned by the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport). It serves the western Massachusetts region, including the cities of Springfield, Holyoke, and Northampton. CEF is classified as a general aviation airport by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), with two runways available for aircraft operations.
The history of Westover Metro Airport dates back to World War II when it was established as Westover Air Force Base. It was named after Major General Oscar Westover, who was killed in a plane crash in 1938. During the war, Westover Air Force Base served as a major training facility for the United States Army Air Forces.
In 1947, Westover Air Force Base was transferred to the United States Air Force, which continued to use the facility for various purposes, including air defense, logistics, and training. In 1968, Westover Air Force Base was closed and transferred to the Massachusetts Port Authority, which converted it to a civilian airport.
Today, Westover Metro Airport is primarily used for general aviation, including private aircraft, corporate jets, and flight training. It is also home to several businesses, including aircraft maintenance and repair facilities, flight schools, and aviation-related companies.
CEF is served by several fixed-base operators (FBOs) that provide fuel, maintenance, and other services to aircraft owners and operators. The airport also has a terminal building with amenities such as a passenger lounge, conference rooms, and a restaurant.
Westover Metro Airport is an important economic driver for the western Massachusetts region. It supports over 1,000 jobs and generates over $200 million in annual economic activity. The airport is also a major contributor to the tourism industry in the Berkshires, as it provides access to the region for visitors from around the country.
Massport is currently investing in the future development of Westover Metro Airport. The airport is undergoing a major renovation project that will include upgrades to the terminal building, runway, and other facilities. The project is expected to be completed in 2024 and will position CEF to meet the growing demand for aviation services in the western Massachusetts region.
